TUCSON, Ariz.  — The Carthage College baseball wrapped up a nine-game slate in the state of Arizona on Saturday.

How it Happened
  • In their first game in Arizona, the Firebirds got on the board first with an RBI double from Collin Callahan
  • Gustavus Adolphus responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying it at one. 
  • Gustavus Adolphus added three runs in the six, taking control 4-1. 
  • In the seventh, a wild pitch scored AJ Gaca
  • Later in the inning, an RBI single from Drew Knecht allowed Kody Krekling to score, shrinking the deficit to one. 
  • In the eighth, a two-run single from Krekling and an RBI single from Joe Zuleger gave Carthage a 6-4 lead heading to the ninth. 
  • Though Gustavus Adolphus scored one in the ninth, a game-ending groundout won it for Carthage. 
 
  • After Concordia (Wis.) opened game two with two runs in the first, Callahan singled, which scored Cody Tostrud
  • In the second, a base hit from Tostrud scored Krekling, tying it at two. 
  • The Falcons responded with five runs in the third, although the Firebirds responded with two off a bases-loaded walk and a groundout narrowing the gap to three. 
  • Concordia (Wis.) registered runs in the fourth and fifth innings, moving ahead 11-4; however, Knecht belted a two-run home run in the sixth. 
  • Three RBI singles from Krekling, Chuckie Smith, and Oren Hill cut the lead to two heading to the eighth inning. 
  • The Falcons added an RBI double in the eighth, moving the score to 12-9. 
  • Evan Devine cut the lead to one with a two-RBI single, but the Firebirds fell short 12-11. 
 
  • Carthage started the second game of Sunday's action with a double to left field from Knecht, which scored Tostrud. 
  • Callahan struck a triple to center field to score Knecht for a 2-0 score. 
  • Wesleyan responded with eight runs in the second. 
  • An RBI double from Smith and a single from Logan Grimm cut the margin to four. 
  • In the fourth, another RBI double to right field from Knecht made it 8-5. 
  • Wesleyan retaliated with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. 
  • A balk allowed Gaca to cross home plate, but Wesleyan scored four in the seventh and won 16-6. 
  • On Monday, Macalester took a 7-0 lead to the ninth inning until Mike Ciesla singled through the right side, scoring Lucas Hines
  • A ground out gave Macalester the win.  
 
  • Wednesday saw Hamline go ahead first in the second. 
  • Carthage responded, tying it at one with an RBI single from P.J. Moser
  • Carthage scored two on an error following a home run in the third for Hamline.
  • A two-run home run in the ninth from Tostrud tied it at four. 
  • Carthage won with a walk-off RBI single from Ciesla. 
 
  • The Firebirds scored seven runs in the first three innings against Augsburg. 
  • A three-run homer from Zuleger and a two-run single from Krekling moved the score to 12-1. 
  •  Ciesla added an RBI triple in the fifth as Carthage cruised to the 13-2 victory. 
  • Macalester struck first, going ahead 7-0 in the second. 
  • Carthage got on the board with a single to left field from Krekling. 
  • Hines singled up the middle, which narrowed the gap to seven in the seventh. 
  • In the eighth, Ciesla singled, allowing Tostrud to score. 
  • Though Jake Fulton and Moser crossed the plate in the ninth, Macalester won 10-6.  
 
  • Hamline went ahead by three early in the second. 
  • Carthage got the scoring going with an RBI double from Zuleger in the fourth. 
  • Gaca came across the the plate off a ground out in the fifth which sliced the lead to 3-2; however Hamline got a run back in the bottom inning. 
  • Moser belted an RBI double in the sixth as the Firebirds trailed only one. 
  • After Hamline scored one in the eighth, Gaca singled which scored Callahan. 
  • A strikeout and ground out gave Hamline the win 5-4. 
 
  • Macalester took a 7-0 lead in the second. 
  • Krekling singled to left field which allowed a run to cross the plate in the third. 
  • Hines singled up the middle in the seventh as the Macalester margin deflated to seven. 
  • Although Carthage plated a lone run in the eighth and two runs in the ninth, Macalester won 10-6.  
 
  • In the final game in Arizona, Carlton struck first until an RBI single from Evan Devine tied it at one in the fifth. 
  • Krekling singled through the left side as Devine crossed home plate giving Carthage the lead 2-1. 
  • A lone run for Carlton in the sixth tied the game at two. 
  • A sac fly from Gaca was deep enough to score Hill regaining the advantage for the Firebirds 3-2. 
  • Carlton used two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth for a 6-3 score heading to the final inning. 
  • Although a two-run double from Matt Felber saw the margin erase to one, a flyout won it for Carlton. 
High Flyers
  • Kody Krekling drove in two runs against Gustavus Adolphus as Collin Callahan had a double in the game. Krekling is currently on a nine-game hitting streak. 
  • Bryce Schaum picked up his first win on the mound striking out seven through 5.1 innings of work against Gustavus Adolphus. 
  • Schaum later pitched seven innings, striking out five in his second win of the season against Augsburg. 
  • Against Concordia (Wis.) Cody Tostrud had a team-best four hits, followed by Oren Hill, Drew Knecht, Callahan, Evan Devine, and Logan Grimm, all with two. 
  • Dante Guarascio struck out seven through three innings against Concordia (Wis.). 
  • Joe Zuleger had two home runs against Augsburg on Thursday. 
  • In the final game in Arizona, Nick Hamilton struck out nine batters through six innings and only allowed four hits.
