ORLANDO, Fla. - The Carthage College men's tennis team made the trek down to sunny Florida for Spring Break, taking on five teams in four days.
Day one's originally-scheduled opener against Coe College was canceled due to torrential rain in the Sunshine State, so the team's true opener came against No. 10 Denison on March 14. Denison entered the match with a No. 10 national ranking and only one loss on the year, which came at the hands of the No. 1 UChicago Maroons in mid-February. The Big Red showcased the validity of their ranking, sweeping the Firebirds 9-0.
Luca Okino was the lone Firebird able to bring a match to a third set, falling 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 singles flight.
The Firebirds flipped the script in their second match on the 14th, sweeping College of St. Scholastica 9-0 just hours after being swept themselves. Carthage dominated St. Scholastica, surrendering only 11 games in its six combined singles matches. The team's doubles pairings all won their matches by at least four games.
Division II Saint Thomas Aquinas, a regionally-ranked team according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), was Carthage's next opponent in Florida as the two teams matched up on Wednesday morning. With the match being scored using NCAA DII scoring rules, then-6-0 Saint Thomas Aquinas defeated Carthage 7-0. The Firebirds did pick up a win in the match, however, as
Yanozie Amadike and
Myles Krzewinski teamed up at No. 1 doubles to secure a convincing 6-1 victory.
Men's tennis defeated Transylvania 7-2 on Thursday behind excellent performances in five out of its six singles matches. Krzewinski, Welker, and Ferruzzi each lost only a single game in their matches at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 singles, respectively.
In their final match in Florida, the Firebirds took down then 13-1 UW-Superior 9-0 on Friday. The team surrendered only one set in the entire dual match, as
Nicolas Welker lost the second set in his No. 3 singles match before rebounding to win a third-set tiebreaker 10-3. Krzewinski stepped into the No. 2 singles flight, winning 6-2, 6-1, while
Marco Czosnyka saw action at No. 6 singles. Czosnyka defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-4.
The Firebirds' only two losses of the trip came against a 8-1 and nationally-ranked Denison team and an undefeated Saint Thomas Aquinas (NCAA DII institution). The team went 3-2 overall, with key wins against Transylvania and UW-Superior to round out its trip at 8-4 on the year. Conference play begins for the Firebirds on Sunday, April 2 against North Central College and runs through the end of April.
