David Neff Named CCIW Coach of the Year, Three Student-Athletes Earn All-CCIW Honors

5/4/2022 11:30:00 AM

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) released their 2022 men's lacrosse season awards on Wednesday, selecting David Neff as the CCIW Coach of the Year, Andrew Johnson and George Burchfield to the All-CCIW First Team, and Jameson Stahl to the All-CCIW Second Team.

For the third time in his career, Neff was honored by the conference as the coach of the year, after previously winning the award in 2017 and 2015. Picked to finish fifth in the preseason CCIW polls, the Firebirds ended the 2022 regular season with a record of 12-4 overall and 5-1 in conference, finishing second in the CCIW standings. Carthage is set to host North Central College in the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament on Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. at Art Keller Field.

After earning a second team honor as a freshman last season, Johnson was given a spot on the All-CCIW First Team for yet another incredible season on offense. The sophomore currently owns 73 total points to his name, tied for the 10th-most in a single season at Carthage, and has led the team in goals and points most of the season. Johnson currently ranks second in the CCIW in points per game, and fourth in both goals and assists per game.

Another consistent presence across the CCIW leaderboards on offense, Burchfield owns 68 total points on 44 goals and 24 assists this season. The sophomore sits one point away from 100 total points for his career, and ranks fourth in points per game in the CCIW, and sixth in both goals and assists per game. He led the entire conference in CCIW play this spring with 24 goals, four more than the next student-athlete, while averaging 5.17 points per game.

Earning a spot on the second all-conference team defense was Jameson Stahl, his first such honor of his career. The junior from Stillwater, Minn. helped pace the Carthage defense that finished third in the CCIW in caused turnovers and second in ground balls. Stahl ranked second on the team in caused turnovers with 14 and grabbed 34 ground balls for the Firebirds.

The CCIW RESPECT Award for Carthage was given to Hayden Fischer, a senior defender from Wheaton, Ill. who saw action in 13 games for the Firebirds this season.

The Carthage men's lacrosse team continues their 2022 season in the CCIW Tournament this weekend, hosting North Central on Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. at Art Keller Field.
