RACINE, Wis. — The Carthage women's tennis team began their spring season this Sunday afternoon, falling 5-4 in a close contest with the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks at the Life Sport Athletic Club.
After dropping courts numbers one and three in doubles to open the match, freshmen duo Luana Da Silva and Sasha Manojlovic capitalized on court two, winning 8-7 in a heated match against the visiting team.
Court three would fall to the Scarlet Hawks to begin singles play, before freshman Maddie Kearney claimed court six, winning in three sets 0-6, 6-2, (1-0) to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of IIT. Freshman Giovanna Mendes and Sasha Manojlovic would win courts four and five with mutual 6-4, 6-2 victories to give Carthage the 4-3 advantage heading into the last two sets of the day.
After court number two fell to the Hawks to even the match at 4-4, Giana Apostoli would battle for the advantage on court one, falling just short 6-4, 4-6, (0-1) to give IIT the match at 5-4.
The Firebirds travel to Orlando, Fla. next week to play four matches spread throughout the Spring break weekday. The first match will be against Coe College on March 14th at 9:00 AM E.T.
