LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — The Carthage men's tennis team went 1-1 in dual matches for the day this Saturday afternoon, receiving their first loss of the season against the No. 33 ranked team in the nation UW-Whitewater before sweeping the University of Dubuque 9-0. The Firebirds now hold a record of 9-1 on the year.

Match One - vs. Whitewater
The Firebirds fell 9-0 in their first match of the day against No. 33 Wisconsin-Whitewater. Cooper Ferruzzi and Nicolas Welker opened the match on doubles court three. Court two fell 8-5 to the opposing team, before Moore and Amadike fell 8-6 in a close contest with Whitewater's Gray and Zakowski, who are ranked 13th nationally for doubles.

Singles action began with Amadike falling 6-1, 6-1 to his opponent Lindwall, who is currently ranked 16th nationally in singles. Back on court one, Daniel Moore would lose 6-3, 6-2 against No. 13 in the country Zakowski. The remaining courts would fall to Whitewater, with the last court of the day ending narrowly escaping the Firebirds as Ferruzzi finished 6-2, 5-7, (10-6) against his opponent.

"We played a really good team today," said head coach Brady Lindsley. "We're very competitive in doubles but ended up losing close in all three. It kind of took the wind out of our sails. Back to work now against Dubuque."

Match Two - vs. Dubuque
The team quickly bounced back in their second match of the day, sweeping the University of Dubuque 9-0.

Hayden Friese and Nick Marino opened 8-1 on doubles court three, before Andre Antreassian and Tripp Schulte followed on court no. 2 8-1 again. Daniel Moore and Yanozie Amadike closed 8-2 on court one to give the Firebirds a 3-0 cushion heading into singles.

Friese swept his sets on court six 6-0, 6-0 to begin singles, while Antreassian won 6-1, 6-0 on court number five. Neither Schulte nor Marino surrendered a point on courts three and four, winning 6-0, 6-0 in both contests. Moore took court one 6-1, 6-1, and Ferruzzi closed the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win on court two to give Carthage the 9-0 victory.

The Firebirds host the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks next Sunday, March 6th at the Life Sport Athletic Club in Racine, Wis.
