Men’s Lacrosse Opens Season with 10-7 Road Win

2/12/2022 4:35:00 PM

Box Score CONWAY, Ark. — For the sixth-straight season, the Carthage men's lacrosse team began their schedule with a road win, as the Firebirds defeated Hendrix 10-7 at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

"This is a really young group, and not what we expected going in, but there is a lot to get better at," said head coach David Neff. "We were down a lot of guys today including Sam Wallace, who had a great day on the board diving for the Firebirds. So, I am proud of the group that played short and we will just need to learn from our mistakes and get back to work to get ready for Dubuque."

Carthage was led on offense by freshman Andrew Frey, as the Broomfield, Colo. native scored three for the Firebirds, followed by Andrew Johnson and George Buirchfield, who each found the back of the net twice. Michael Stell, Johnny Lane, and first-year player Ben Krok each scored one as well.

Defensively, sophomore Blake Raphael starred in goal for Carthage, accumulating over 20 saves on the day to help the Firebirds move to 6-0 against Hendrix all time.

Carthage will remain on the road next, as they take on the University of Dubuque on Saturday, February 19 at 1 p.m. in Iowa.
