Firebirds Come in First at Wisconsin Private Championships

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's swimming and diving took first place during the Wisconsin Private Championships held at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday. 

Collecting 307 team points, the Firebirds won eight races during the swim events on Saturday. Ashleigh Espinoza won two races on the day, picking up first place in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events. Jordyn Bloode registered a winning time of 5:20.47 in the 500-yard freestyle event. Michelle Gorney placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.17). Emma Roche clocked a time of 2:14.34 in the 200-yard backstroke, while Elise Merucci finished first with a time of 4:56.97 in the 400-yard individual medley. 

In relay events, the team of Maria GutzweilerJordyn KaplanGrace Norman, and Izzy Bertaud won the 200-yard medley race. Gutzweiler, Bertaud, and Bloode swam in the 200-yard freestyle along with Kaitlyn Fogo.

Carthage returns to the pool on Saturday, February 5, participating in the University of Illinois-Chicago Diving Invitational at 11 a.m.
