Firebirds Coast Past Wesleyan in First CCIW Championship Match

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage men's tennis team grabbed their first win of the CCIW Men's Tennis Championship this Tuesday afternoon as they defeated Illinois Wesleyan University 6-1.

The Firebirds started off strong in doubles play with an 8-0 victory on court three courtesy of Tripp Schulte and Andre Antreassian. After dropping court one 8-3, Carthage would close out doubles action with an 8-5 win on court two from Kevin Dunn and Cooper Ferruzzi to gain the 2-1 doubles advantage heading into singles play.

Nicolas Welker kicked things off on court two in singles with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over his opponent, which set the pace for the remainder of the match. Cooper Ferruzzi bested his competition on court four 6-1, 6-2, while Andre Antreassian followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win of his own on court five. The final court of the day to finish would come from Chris Mitev on court six, where he won his sets 6-4, 6-0 to give Carthage the 6-1 overall advantage for the event.

The final two courts in singles play, which were occupied by Tripp Schulte and Matt Krzewinski, did not finish their sets since the match had already been decided in favor of the Firebirds.

Carthage takes on Augustana in the next round of the CCIW Men's Tennis Championship, which will be held at Elmhurst University on May 7th.
