Men Sweep Concordia Wisconsin, Women Fall to Falcons

3/5/2021 9:35:00 PM

RACINE, Wis. — In a doubleheader with Concordia (Wis.), the Carthage College women's team dropped their season opener 7-2 before the men swept the Falcons 9-0 on Friday at the LifeSport Athletic Club.

The women began the day with a victory in doubles at court two, as Sierra Sonnemaker and Faelan O'Shaughnessy picked up an 8-4 win. However, the visitors would take the remaining two doubles courts.

The visitors claimed the first four singles courts to finish, clinching the match win, before Sam Ramsey got a win for the Firebirds (0-1) at court one 6-3, 6-2. The Concordia (Wis.) women's team (2-2) would pick up the final win for the 7-2 victory.

"The women played hard and competed well," said head coach Brady Lindsley. "I think the 11 months without competition showed, but we'll keep striving to improve everyday and we will get better."

In the second game of the evening, the Carthage men's team (1-3) swept the doubles, beginning with an 8-2 win at court three by Patrick Anderson and Andre Antreassian. The duos of Matt Krzewinski and Cooper Ferruzzi, and Nicolas Welker and Tripp Schulte made it 3-0 in favor of the Firebirds as the teams went to singles.

At court six, Hayden Friese would finish first with a 6-2, 6-0 victory, before last week's conference player of the week, Ferruzzi, won his singles match at court five to seal the Carthage victory. The remaining singles courts would go to the Firebirds as Antreassian, Welker, Schulte, and Krzewinski finished off the 9-0 Carthage win.

"The men really played focused tennis tonight," said Lindsley. "I'm happy for them. We've played a very tough schedule so far, so it was nice to get a win. Hopefully we can carry that over into Sunday's match against St. Thomas."

Up next, the women's team will take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday, March 14 at 3 p.m. in Racine, while the men will face St. Thomas University this Sunday, March 7 at 1:30 p.m. in Kenosha.
