Box Score LAKE BARRINGTON, Ill. — The Carthage men's lacrosse team got their 2021 season off to a fantastic start on Friday afternoon, picking up a 17-6 victory over Alma College at the Canlan Sportsplex.
Carthage (1-0) took an early lead in the first quarter, going up on Alma (0-1) 5-3, before going out in front at the halftime break 7-4. Taking a 10-5 advantage at the end of the third, a strong offensive showing in the second half led Carthage to a 17-6 final score.
The men's lacrosse team is scheduled to face Concordia University Chicago next, hosting them at Art Keller Field on Saturday, February 27 at 1 p.m.
"Anytime you can win an opener you take it, but we have a lot of work to do. Alma was down a couple key guys but I thought they were a pretty gritty bunch. Our SSM's (Stahl, Lane, Henry) were the engine for the team today and helped us on both sides of the ball. They really drove us home today with big stops on the defensive side and in transition the other way, it broke the game open.
Andrew Johnson had a great start to his career and we had a very balanced offense with a lot of guys getting on the board. I need to get to work and figure out our pieces on offense and should have been better prepared for a zone, so that's on me, but we have a lot of potential. Defensively, we were not helping each other and we gave them three early. But the guys settled in and locked it up the last three quarters with everyone logging pretty good minutes today."
