Women's Swim and Dive Place Third at Calvin Quad Invite

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Carthage College women's swimming and diving team finished the second day of the Calvin Quad Invitational on Saturday, placing third with a team score of 853.

Carthage started the morning with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with swimmers Maria Gutzweiler, Jordyn Kaplan, Grace Norman and Izzy Bertaud. Allison Vassilakos clocked a winning time of 2:00.05 in the 200-yard freestyle, while Kaplan took fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the 100-yard backstroke, Gutzweiler finished second, recording a time of 1:02.40, while Bloode, Elise Merucci, Ashleigh Espinoza and Vassilakos won the 800-yard freestyle relay.

During the evening session, Vassilakos and Bloode went one and two in the 1650-yard freestyle event. Bloode later placed second in the 200-yard backstroke event with a time of 2:13.11, while Abby Barnes took fifth in the event (2:18.53).

In diving events, Kaycee Siears and Patricia Banasik placed sixth and seventh respectively in the one-meter event.

The Firebirds return to the pool on Friday, November 19, facing Wheaton (Ill.) in their first conference meet of the season starting at 6 p.m.
