Firebirds Win 2021 CCIW Women’s Golf Championship as Rohwedder Earns Individual Title

10/2/2021 8:29:00 PM

NORMAL, Ill. — The Carthage women's golf team won their eighth conference championship in program history this Saturday as they pushed past Illinois Wesleyan to take first at the 2021 CCIW Women's Golf Championships. The Firebirds broke several records throughout the three-day tournament, including a CCIW and school record-low three day score of 903 (+39). They also set a new two-day record low of 587 (+11), as well as a one-day low of 293 (+5) yesterday in round two.

Adrienne Rohwedder became Carthage's fifth medalist after shooting a tournament low 218 (+2) over three rounds. Rohwedder's 218 today set a new conference and school record for lowest three-round tournament score, improving on the previous record she set of 224 back in 2019 where she placed second overall. She also tied her two-day record of 143 which was set earlier this year. The school's last conference medalist was Sarah Lyman in 2017.

Kate Munro earned all-conference honors as she improved to third place individually after shooting a career-best 69 (-3) this afternoon. Her 69 today is the second lowest one-round score in program history, while her three-round finish of 222 (+6) is the second lowest in the school's history. Munro now holds the Firebirds' lowest two-day score record of 141 (-3) after yesterday's round of 72.

Madi McCoy also broke the previous three-day record with her 223 (+7), finishing with all-conference honors and a fourth-place tie individually. McCoy improved 24 strokes this year over last year's 10th place tournament finish. Alina Brindza finished in 16th place after carding 243 (+27) for the event, one stroke lower than her score in last season's tournament. Brindza was also awarded the CCIW RESPECT Award for the Firebird squad following the conclusion of the tournament today.

Symantha Rohwedder tied for 20th place in her first championship appearance after carding 247 (+31) over the three-day event. Three strokes behind her was freshman Lorelei Oomens, who ended in 22nd place with 250 (+34) to round out Carthage's six-player scorecard.

Head coach Brandy Johnston won her third-consecutive Coach of the Year award following the conclusion of today's round, giving her the school record for most consecutive COTY awards in program history. Johnston first received the award after her 2019 team won conference, and was again awarded the honor in 2020 after finishing in second place.

Head Coach Brandy Johnston:

"The first day was a little disappointing to say the least. Starting day two with a 20 stroke deficit was a little daunting, but erasing that lead in just one day proved to be a game changer for us. It gave us a lot of momentum, and allowed us to start day 3 back at 0-0. We took a more business like approach on days two and three, which helped us to better manage our emotions on the golf course. I'm really proud of the way we responded today, in particular, because the toughest round is normally the one right after your best round. We didn't let that bother us, and I'm just really proud of this team and the way they persevered throughout the whole weekend. We're very excited that we won the automatic bid to the 2022 National Championships, and we're going to get to work during this off-season to make sure we are well prepared when May gets here."
