Lady Reds Fall in Opening Match at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. -- The Carthage women's tennis team fell 7-2 to Wheaton College in their first match of the season on Friday evening at Wheaton Tennis Courts.

"We competed hard, but lost to a very good team tonight," said head coach Brady Lindsley. "However, we showed a lot of fight and we will get better from this experience."

Wheaton (3-0, 1-0 CCIW) came out strong to begin the match as they took all three courts in the doubles competition. While the Lady Reds (0-1, 0-1 CCIW) surrendered the first four matches to finish in singles, they were able to bounce back and take the final two.

Jen Ptak notched Carthage's first victory after winning in three sets against Emme Lindquist. The freshman battled out a tough 7-6 win in set number one, before surrendering set two 0-6. Ptak claimed the tiebreaker 10-8 for the victory.

Giana Apostoli made it back-to-back victories for the Lady Reds after defeating Claire Browning in three sets on the lead court. After dominating the first set, winning 6-1, Apostoli came back from a 1-6 loss in the second to claim the third 6-3. This was the first career win for both Ptak and Apostol, who are freshman, in their Carthage careers.

Carthage will be back on the court next Friday when they host Carroll University at 4 p.m. at the Smeds Tennis Center.
