Carthage Women’s Tennis Team Blanks Carroll in Home Opener

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Playing for the first time this season on their home courts, the Carthage College women's tennis team defeated Carroll University 9-0 Friday evening at the Smeds Tennis Center.

"The ladies played very well this evening, under not the best playing conditions," said head coach Brady Lindsley. "It was windy but they all kept themselves under control, moved well, and stayed patient."

The Lady Reds (1-1, 1-1 CCIW) swept the Pios (2-4, 0-3 CCIW) in doubles to begin competition. On court three, Nia Pham and Sierra Sonnemaker finished their match first with an 8-1 victory, with Rachel Anderson and Sam Ramsey taking down their opponents 8-4. Giana Apostoli and Jen Ptak made it a 3-0 contest in favor of Carthage with an 8-6 victory at court one.

Ramsey was first to finish in singles, as she got the win 6-2, 6-2 at court three, while freshman Ptak clinched the win for the Lady Reds with a 6-2, 6-1 win at court two.

"I'm really proud of how they all battled tonight," said Lindsley. "Our two freshman at the top of the lineup both played well and were very poised. I'm looking forward to seeing their games develop throughout this season."

At court six, Sonnemaker got the win by a score of 6-2, 6-1, while Apostoli won her match at the lead court 6-4, 6-2. Pham and Anderson were the last two to finish their matches, giving the Lady Reds the 9-0 win for their first dual match win of the season.

Carthage will take a break from dual matches to compete in the ITA Midwest Regional in St. Peter, Minn. beginning on Friday, September 20.
