Szun Breaks CCIW Career Scoring Record in 25-5 Thrashing of Carroll

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team entered the stretch run of their 2019 campaign with a Tuesday-night bout against Carroll University at Art Keller Field. Another all-time scoring record went down for senior attack Andy Szun, whose eight-point game in the Red Men's 25-5 win over Carroll University gives him a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin career record 307 points.

Szun, who became the Red Men all-time leading scorer in a 14-9 win over Huntingdon on March 7, broke Michael Julius's (Illinois Wesleyan) CCIW career record 305 points. His milestone goal occurred at the 3:38 mark of the third quarter that gave Carthage a 19-3 lead. Szun led all scorers with five goals and three assists for eight points, while Colin Poitras was on his heels with four goals and three assists for seven points. Noah Lindner posted a five-point game with three goals and two assists for five points.

The Red Men defense forced 25 Carroll turnovers, which attributed to a dismal 13-of-28 mark in clears. Carthage notched an 11-of-12 mark in the clear department, and outshot the Pioneers 71-20. The Red Men also held advantages in ground balls (53-21), and face-offs won (28-4). Reigning CCIW Defensive Player of the Week Griffin Cleary notched an 18-of-21 mark in the face-off circle.

Sam Kotsonas, Zerik Rodriguez and Kyle Guthrie all saw action in net for the Red Men. Rodriguez made all four of Carthage's saves while Abe Escarda notched 18 stops for the Pioneers.

The Red Men improve to 12-3, 3-1 CCIW while Carroll drops to 0-14, 0-5 CCIW.

Carthage didn't surrender their first shot of the game until 0:52 was left in the second quarter, which followed with Carroll's man-up goal with 0:46 left that narrowed their deficit to 13-1. The Red Men made the most of their final 0:46 in the half with goals from Szun and Brody Ilstrup that pushed their advantage to 15-1.

The Pioneers came back with 18 second-half shots, but it wasn't enough for them to overcome a 25-5 loss to the Red Men.

Carthage will face Elmhurst on Wednesday, April 24 at Langhorst Field in Elmhurst, Illinois at 7:30 p.m.
