Carthage Falls in Close Battle with Augustana

KENOSHA, Wis. -- It all came down to a tiebreak at court two, but the Carthage College women's tennis team fell just short by a score of 5-4 to undefeated Augustana Friday afternoon at the Smeds Tennis Center.

The Lady Reds (2-3, 2-3 CCIW) would take an initial lead with Giana Apostoli and Jen Ptak winning their doubles match 8-1 at the lead court. The Vikings (6-0, 5-0 CCIW) evened the score after taking court three, but Carthage would enter singles with a 2-1 advantage after Sam Ramsey and Rachel Anderson won their match at court two 8-3.

The visitors responded once again to lead off singles as they took court five, before Apostoli won her match 6-2, 6-0 at court one to make it 3-2. The two teams would trade points once again, as Ramsey kept the advantage in the Lady Reds' favor with a 6-2, 6-4 win at court three.

After Augustana won court six to make it a 4-4 match, court two went to a tiebreak in the second set at 6-6, with the visitors inching out the win.

Carthage will remain at home in Kenosha and host Elmhurst next Wednesday, October 9 at the Smeds Tennis Center at 4 p.m.
