Three Homers Lift Red Men Over Vikings Tuesday, 6-4

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College baseball team won their fifth straight game on Tuesday night, completing the season sweep of North Park University at Augie Schmidt Field with a 6-4 win.

With their fifth win in four days Carthage moves to 29-8 and 16-5 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Vikings drop to 15-20 and 10-10 in the conference.

"It has been a tough stretch with five games in four days, but Kyle Damon came out today and gave us a great start," said head coach Augie Schmidt IV after the win.  "Our pitchers did really well today and it allowed us to finish this long stretch of games.  I am really proud of our team for how they came out these past few days.  Last Wednesday we lost two one-run games down at Elmhurst and then we come back and win five, which shows a lot of resilience.  So, really proud of the guys and now we get an off day before getting ready for Illinois Wesleyan."

On the mound, after a shaky first inning, Kyle Damon turned in his best outing of the season as he picked up his first win of the season.  The sophomore went seven innings and allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out four.  Damon also induced a pair of groundballs that were tailor-made that Myles Farley and Ryan Kramer turned up the middle to help Damon.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Red Men answered in the second with four runs to take their first lead, 4-2.  Vince Schwartz led the inning off with a double to center and was driven in with no one out on a Joe Sisk single.  Then, with two outs, Ben Levicki and Colton Klein launched a pair of homeruns to take the lead.

In the third, Carthage added two more runs with a Nick Pierce solo home run to lead off the inning, and Myles Farley drove in Sisk on a fielder's choice.  Sisk, Levicki and Klein each led the Red Men with a pair of hits each and Levicki's two-run homer gave him the team-high for runs batted in.

After a pair of Viking runs in the eighth, Joe Sambucci entered in the ninth and picked up his second save of the season as Cody Phelps used his body to knock down the a two-out shot to third to record the third out for the win.

The Red Men will return to action on Friday for their final three-game series of the season, as Carthage hosts Illinois Wesleyan University at Augie Schmidt Field.  The series will open on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. and will conclude with a Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday.
