KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College baseball team dropped their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin series of the season this weekend, falling in the rubber match at North Central College, 9-2.
The loss sends the Red Men to 24-6 on the season and to 11-3 in the conference, while the Cardinals take over first in the CCIW with a record of 12-2 and overall record of 17-7.
A poor defensive first inning put the Red Men in a hole that they would never be able to climb out of. Carthage committed four errors in the inning leading to four unearned runs off starter
Nate Odahl, allowing the Cardinals to take a 5-0 lead after the first.
Odahl took the loss, dropping him to 6-1 on the season, allowing eight hits over three innings and allowing seven runs; only three of which were earned however.
Offensively, the Red Men combined for just five hits against Cardinals starter Austin Polezoes, who picked up the complete game win.
Ryan Kramer led Carthage with two hits in the loss and
Cody Phelps and
Clayton Taylor knocked in the Red Men's only two runs in the sixth and seventh innings respectively.
Sunday's loss opens a six-game road swing for the Red Men who head to Elmhurst College next for a Wednesday doubleheader with the Bluejays to wrap-up their season series. First pitch for game one from Butterfield is set for 2:00 p.m. The Red Men took game one of the series at Augie Schmidt Field back on April 5th, 19-12.
