Baseball Splits With North Central Saturday At Augie Schmidt Field

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men split the opening two games of the biggest series to date of the 2018 regular season on Saturday, taking game two to force a rubber match on Sunday with the North Central College Cardinals at Augie Schmidt Field.

The split moves the #19 Red Men to 24-5 on the season and to 11-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Cardinals also go to 11-2 in the league and to 16-8 overall.

Game 1: North Central 1, Carthage 0
The Red Men fell in game one after managing just four hits against Charlie Klemm, who out dueled Carthage starter Kevin Tibor for the win.  Klemm and Tibor both went the distance, with North Central's lone run coming in the first inning.

The Red Men hurt themselves on the bases early, as a pair of base running blunders that cost Carthage opportunities.

The Red Men stranded six base runners on their way to their first loss in their last seven outings and the first loss of season for Tibor.

Game 2: Carthage 7, North Central 5
In game two, the Red Men used some late offense to split their opening doubleheader with the Cardinals.

Carthage fell behind, 1-0, in the second before scoring a pair of runs in the third and fourth to build a 4-1 lead with Matt Willett on the mound.

North Central got a run back in the fifth, knocking Willett out after working 4.2 inning allowing two earned runs on five hits, striking out and walking six in a no decision.  Two innings later the Cardinals took the lead back in the seventh with three runs in the seventh to give North Central the 6-5 win.

Carthage answered with two in the bottom of the seventh after the Cardinals gave the Red Men an extra out, and Myles Farley delivered a two-out two-run single, scoring Nick Pierce and Clayton Taylor.   Vince Schwartz added some insurance in the eighth with and RBI single to left to score Ryan Kramer in the eighth and Brian Polaski built upon his record-setting season with his ninth save of the year.

David Woods picked up his first career win in an inning of work in the seventh.
