TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carthage College Red Men won their fifth straight in Arizona on Friday afternoon, defeating Cornell College, 10-4.
The win improves Carthage to 6-2 on the season, while Cornell falls to 1-2.
"Two freshmen had quite a day today," said Augie Schmidt on
David Woods and
Colton Klein. "Colton just continues to hit and is over .500 right now. He is leading us as a freshman. And today, Woods pitches in his first college game and gives us 2.2 innings of unbelievable relief as he backed up a heck of a performance by
Nate Odahl. Nate pitched great today in the start. Today was a great pitched game. We didn't play as well defensively, but we hit enough to make up for that. The best thing that came out of today was we found another pitcher!"
The Red Men opened the scoring in the second inning when
Vince Schwartz pulled a ball down the third base line for a two-base error that was then kicked around by the left fielder allowing both
Colton Klein and
Myles Farley to score.
In his second start of the season, Gonzaga transfer
Nate Odahl shined, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out nine in 6.1 innings. Just two of the runs allowed were earned as the sophomore earned his first career win with the Red Men.
In the fifth, Carthage regained the lead on a
Vince Schwartz single to drive in
Cody Phelps and in the sixth Klein drove in pinch hitter
Ben Levicki to go up 5-3.
Leading 5-3 in the seventh, Schmidt pulled his starter and brought in
David Woods for his Carthage debut. Woods shined, allowing just one unearned run on two hits and striking out five of the ten batters he faced in the 2.2 innings. Woods was credited with the eight-out save.
Carthage added insurance in the seventh and eighth as the Red Men took advantage of a pair of errors in the four-run seventh, which included a pair of RBI's from
Johnny Belskis. Schwartz and
Brandon Hanik also had RBI's in the seventh. Hanik delivered again in the eighth with an RBI single to score Pierce, who touched home for the second time in the game.
Colton Klein and
Ryan Dalton each went 3-4 at the dish and Schwartz led all players with four runs batted in.
Carthage finished with ten runs on 13 hits, while Cornell scored four runs on five hits. Both teams committed four errors.
The Red Men will conclude their spring break in the desert on Saturday when Carthage faces Rockford University for the second time this week. First pitch is set for 9:00 a.m. from Tucson.
