Red Men Top Regents Monday In The Desert, 13-10

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carthage College baseball snapped their two-game losing streak on Monday in Arizona, holding on to top the Regents of Rockford University, 13-10.

The win moves the Red Men to 2-2 on the season, while Rockford falls to 0-4.

Joe Sambucci picked up the win in relief to move to 1-0 and Brian Polaski earned his first save of the season.

"Today was more of the same as far as the pitching goes with way to many walks.  We are outhitting teams, but yet giving up a ton of runs.  The good thing is we found a way to win," said head coach Augie Schmidt after the win.  "Brian Polaski bounced back today and really looked like the closer that we thought he was, which was big for us.  We are hitting the ball and playing pretty good defense, but we are giving up way to many free bases, which we need to clean up."

Myles Farley started the Red Men's offense in the second inning, blasting a three-run home run to left center to give the Red Men a early 3-0 lead.

The Polar Bears answered however in the third, after scoring one in the bottom of the second, as the Regents scored four runs on a pair of hits against starter Kyle Damon who went 4.0 innings allowing sic earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three in a no decision.

Carthage responded with five runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a 12-7 lead through five.  In the fourth it was Farley again with an RBI double to left center to start the scoring, as he drove in Ryan Dalton.  Two-batters later, Ryan Kramer scored Vince Schwartz on an error and Cody Phelps and Nick Pierce went back-to-back with a two-RBI double and RBI single to score Kramer, Farley and Phelps respectively.

In the fifth following a leadoff triple by Dalton, Schwartz brought him home on an RBI fielder's choice.  Later in the inning, Colton Klein also tripled to score Farley and Schwartz, and Kramer drove in Klein in the next at bat.

The Regents wouldn't go away, as they continued to chip away at the lead with one in the fifth and sixth and two in seventh to cut the Red Men lead to 12-10.

From there the Red Men bull pen shutdown the Regents, as Owen Reith worked 1.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits, and Brian Polaski struck out a pair in the ninth after inheriting a runner.

The Red Men finished with 13 runs on 16 hits, while committing three errors and leaving four on base.  Farley and Phelps led the Red Men at the plate, as Farley went 2-5 with four RBIs and scoring three times, and Phelps went 3-5 with a pair of RBIs.

The Red Men after playing four games in three days, the Red Men will enjoy a day off before returning to action at the Kino Sports Complex on Wednesday against Northwestern College.  First pitch on Wednesday is set for 9:00 a.m. from Tucson.
