TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carthage College baseball team dropped their lone game on the second day of competition in Arizona on Sunday, falling to Division II's Northern State University, 19-5.
The loss sends Carthage to 1-2 on the season, while the Wolves improve to 1-0 with a win in their opener.
Carthage struck early a run in the first on an RBI groundout by
Nick Pierce to score
Jake Marczuk for a 1-0 lead. Carthage then opened it up with more lively bats in the second as the Red Men scored four more to take a 5-0 lead.
Ryan Kramer drove in
Vince Schwartz on bases loaded hit by pitch and Pierce added to his RBI total with a pair in the second with a single to left, scoring
Myles Farley and
Johnny Belskis.
Cody Phelps capped the second inning with a double down the left field line to bring in
Ryan Kramer, giving the Red Men the five-run advantage through two.
Northern answered quickly and furiously, as they got to Carthage starter
Joe Nelson in the third. After cruising through the first two innings, Nelson walked the bases loaded and the Wolves made him pay with a grand slam. The Wolves had just two hits in the inning but claimed the lead with six runs in the third for a 6-5 lead.
Nelson took the loss on Sunday, falling to 0-1 on the season.
The Wolves would add three in the fourth and two in the fifth before an eight-run outburst in the seventh put the game out of the Red Men's reach.
Carthage finished with five runs on nine hits but left ten on base in the loss, while Northern State recorded 19 runs on 17 hits and left five on.
The Red Men will look to bounce back and snap their current two-game losing streak on Monday as they face Rockford University. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. from the Kino Sports Complex.
