Spartans and Comets on the Horizon for Men's Lacrosse

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team will continue their three-game home stand against Aurora University on Wednesday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m., and will close it on Saturday, March 31 against Olivet College at 1:00 p.m.
 
Andy Szun, who tied for a career-high nine points in Carthage's 24-1 victory over Northland on March 24, enters the week ranked fifth in the country with 5.89 points per game. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native also ranks ninth in the country with 3.89 goals per game.
 
Andy Meyers paces the CCIW and is eighth among NCAA Division III men's lacrosse players with a .736 (128-174) face-off percentage. His figure engineers Carthage's third-ranked .731 face-off winning percentage.  Joe Poremba commands the Red Men defense with a 10th-ranked, 3.11 caused turnovers per game. Carthage is also nationally ranked in assists (91, 5th) and assists per game (10.11, 7th). Starting goalkeeper Zerik Rodriguez sports a 5.97 goals against average and a .511 save percentage over 462:14 of work. 
 
ABOUT AURORA UNIVERSITY (6-1, 2-0 NACC)
 
The Spartans are coming off an 8-6 victory over Albion College on March 25, their lone game last week. Aurora's lone loss this season occurred on March 6, when they fell to Berry College 15-13. The Berry Vikings followed that with a 13-12 victory over the Red Men on March 8.
 
The Spartans are coming off five-straight Midwest Lacrosse Conference Championships, while advancing to the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament Second Round four times in that span.
 
The Red Men will need to exploit an Aurora clearing percentage that ranks fifth in the country with a .901 figure.
 
Joey Lucchesi paces the Spartans in scoring with 23 goals and two assists for 25 points, while Ben Arends trails him with nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points. Corey Segall leads the Aurora face-off men with a .622 (84-135) figure. The Aurora goalkeeping staff is highlighted by Tyler Lombard, who sports an 8.08 goals against average and a .505 save percentage over seven starts this season.
 
Kylor Berkman (100-27) is in his seventh season as Aurora head men's lacrosse coach. The Red Men are 0-9 all-time against the Spartans.
 
ABOUT OLIVET COLLEGE (0-6, 0-0 MIAA)
 
The Comets will pursue their first victory of 2018 after suffering losses to Concordia (Wis.) (3-14), Baldwin Wallace (5-28), Oberlin (3-18), Augustana (Ill.) (5-16), Elmhurst (1-24) and Milwaukee School of Engineering (5-17).
 
Cameron Bazin, who owns 15 goals and three assists for 18 points this season, is Olivet's lone double-digit point scorer. Connor Hamm runs the Comet defense with 12 caused turnovers while Josh Brantley (28-115) commands the face-off efforts. Olivet goalie Jake Steele carries a 19.50 goals against average and a .397 save percentage over six starts this season.
 
The 2017-18 season marks Matt Holtz's third as Olivet head men's lacrosse coach. The Red Men took down Olivet 15-8 in their lone meeting on March 10, 2015.

The Red Men will open CCIW play on Saturday, April 7 at Illinois Wesleyan University. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
