#3 Lady Reds To Face #2 Wheaton in CCIW Semifinal on Friday

FULL GAME NOTES

THE GAMES

  • The #3 Carthage College women's basketball team (18-7, 11-5 CCIW) will make their first appearance in the CCIW Women's Basketball Tournament since 2014-15 on Friday, February 23 when they face #2 Wheaton College (Ill.) (21-4, 14-2 CCIW) at the Shirk Center Arena in Bloomington, Ill. at 5:00 p.m. The top-seed, and host #1 Illinois Wesleyan will square-off against #4 Elmhurst College in the other semifinal game that same night at 7:00 p.m.
  • The Thunder sport an NCAA Division III-leading 216 blocks and 8.6 blocks per game. Twenty-seven of those blocks occurred in their two contests against the Lady Reds.
  • Wheaton will take a 15-game win streak into Friday's semifinal match with Carthage, and a 14-0 record in the 2018 calendar year. Their previous loss occurred in a 67-53 decision against #8 University of Scranton on December 29. Wheaton's other losses this season came against Elmhurst College (71-68), Illinois Wesleyan (88-81) and #11 University of Chicago (82-77). 
  • Jill Berg, who tallied eight blocks against the Lady Reds on January 31, leads the CCIW with 55 blocked shots and 2.20 blocked shots per game. 
  • Hannah Frazier, who was named CCIW Player of the Week three times this season, commands the Thunder offense with 14.8 points per game. Devin Kyler leads the rebounding efforts with 8.2 boards per game, along with 8.9 points per game. 

THE COACHES

  • Kent Madsen (169-47) is in his eighth season as Wheaton College (Ill.) head women's basketball coach. 

THE SERIES

  • The Lady Reds own a 27-52 all-time record against the Thunder. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Lady Reds concluded their 2017-18 regular season with a 90-67 victory over Carroll (Wis.) on February 20. 
  • Madie Kaelber and Bailey Gilbert each tallied 17 points in the contest for the Lady Reds. Gilbert built on her third-ranked .465 three-point field goal percentage prior to the contest with a 5-for-8 night at the three-point line against the Pioneers. 

THE LADY REDS ARE....

  • 8-0 when they shoot .450 or better from the field.
  • 11-1 when they hold opponents to less than 60 points.
  • 16-1 when they lead at halftime. 
  • 12-3 when they score first. 
  • 18-2 when leading with 2:00 remaining.

CCIW TOURNAMENT HIATUS

The Lady Reds will be making their first appearance in the CCIW Tournament since 2014-15, where they fell to Wheaton 65-42 in the semifinal game. 

CCIW TOURNAMENT LINGO

The Lady Reds own a 6-10 all-time record in the CCIW Women's Basketball Tournament, which began in 2002-03. Carthage's last victory in the event came in the 2013-14 CCIW Tournament Championship Game, where they defeated Illinois Wesleyan 63-59. 

KEEPING IT CLOSE

Four of the Lady Reds' six losses this season came within 10 points. The only exceptions occurred in both of their losses to Wheaton College (Ill.). 

MOVING UP THE LADDER

Bailey Gilbert, who owns 183 career three-pointers, sits in third place on the Carthage all-time three-point field goal list. The all-time record for three-point field goals is 202, set by Haley Stercic. 

Morgan Harris, who has 985 career points, needs 15 more points to eclipse 1,000 for her career. 

NCAA RANKINGS (2/23)

Through 25 games, Bailey Gilbert leads the CCIW and ranks third among NCAA Division III women's basketball players with a .475 three-point field goal percentage. Madie Kaelber's .889 (56-63) free throw percentage ranks 10th in the country.
