Rams and #5 Maroons in Lady Reds' Crosshairs

FULL GAME NOTES

THE GAMES

  • The Carthage College women's basketball team (4-3, 1-2 CCIW) will host Cornell College (2-5, 2-2 MWC) after a one-day hiatus from competition on Monday, December 10 at 5:30 p.m.
  • The Lady Reds will end their three-game home stand against #5 University of Chicago (6-1, 0-0 UAA) on Sunday, December 16 at 2:00 p.m.
  • The Rams opened their 2018-19 campaign 0-3, which included losses to CCIW foes Carroll University (45-71) and Illinois Wesleyan University (52-66). Cornell's two victories this season occurred against Beloit College (59-55) on November 30, and Grinnell College (58-45) on December 5. 
  • Cornell will enter Monday off a one-day hiatus after dropping a 78-80 decision against Illinois College on December 8.
  • The Rams pace the Midwest Conference in steals per game (10.6) and three-point field goals per game (7.3) through seven games. 
  • Kandis O'Donnell, who ranks second in the country with a .708 (34-48) field goal percentage, paces Cornell with 10.9 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game. 
  • The #5 Maroons, fresh-off an 84-71 loss to #4 Thomas More on December 3, will face Carthage after a 13-day hiatus from competition. 
  • Three of Chicago's six victories this season came against CCIW foes Illinois Wesleyan (77-76), Wheaton (72-69) and Elmhurst (73-54). 
  • The Maroons are led by Taylor Lake's 15.9 points per game and 6.0 boards per game. Miranda Burt (12.6 PPG.), Mia Farrell (12.3 PPG.) and Olariche Obi (10.4 PPG.) make up the four Chicago players averaging double-figures through seven games. Obi, who pulled down 18 rebounds in Chicago's 96-90 2OT win over Carthage last season, owns a team-leading 6.2 boards per game in 2018-19.

  • Brent Brase (176-155) is in his 14th season as Cornell head women's basketball coach.
  • Carissa Sain (105-56) is in her seventh season as Chicago head women's basketball coach. 

THE SERIES

  • Carthage is 1-0 all-time against Cornell.
  • The Lady Reds are 8-10 all-time against Chicago.
     

LAST TIME OUT

Carthage suffered an 80-67 loss to Wheaton College on December 5 before they tallied their first CCIW victory of 2018-19 with a 92-62 decision over Elmhurst on December 8.

Autumn Kalis notched back-to-back 20-point games against the Thunder and Bluejays. Four players eclipsed double figures scoring for the fourth time this season against Elmhurst, led by Madie Kaelber's season-high 22 points. Sammie Woodward registered 13 points while Bailey Gilbert, who nearly notched her first career double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds against Elmhurst, rounded out the Lady Reds in double figures. 

RECORD WATCH

Bailey Gilbert now owns 201 career three-point field goals made, one shy of tying Haley Stercic's (2011-14) career record mark of 202. 

CARTHAGE IS...

  • 3-0 when holding opponents to under 60 points.
  • 4-0 when leading with 2:00 remaining in the contest. 
  • 4-0 when having more steals than opponents.
  • 3-0 when leading at halftime.

CHICAGO FLAVOR

Madie Kaelber notched a career-high 33 points against Chicago on November 26, 2017 last season. This eclipsed her previous career-high 28 points, also against Chicago on November 27, 2016. 

SUNDAY SUNDAY

The Lady Reds will play Chicago on a Sunday for the eighth consecutive season in 2018-19.

IOWA SUCCESS

Carthage carries an 18-10 all-time record against NCAA Division III schools located in Iowa. 

MONDAY MONDAY

Carthage hasn't hosted a Monday game since December 29, 2014, when they took down St. Mary's (Ind.) 86-42. 

RANKED OPPONENTS

Chicago is one-of-three current ranked opponents on Carthage's 2018-19 schedule along with #13 Illinois Wesleyan and #19 Gettysburg.
