Lady Reds Open 2018-19 CCIW Play at #13 Illinois Wesleyan

FULL GAME NOTES

THE GAME

  • The 2018-19 CCIW opener will pit the Carthage College women's basketball team (3-1, 0-0 CCIW) at #13 Illinois Wesleyan University (4-2, 0-0 CCIW) on Saturday, December 1 at 5:00 p.m. 
  • Saturday's bout will feature squads off extended hiatuses as the Lady Reds will be on 11 day's rest while Illinois Wesleyan will conclude a six-day stretch without competition. 
  • The Titans have won four of their last five games since they opened 2018-19 with a 77-76 loss to University of Chicago on November 11. 
  • The 2018-19 Cornell Classic on November 16-17 saw the Titans run the table with victories over Wartburg College (68-52) and Cornell College (66-52). Carthage ran the table at the 2017-18 Cornell Classic with victories over Bethel University (77-68) and Cornell College (68-56).
  • Illinois Wesleyan registered the 2018-19 DePauw University Midwest Challenge Championship on November 24-25 with an 80-60 victory over the host #9 Tigers, and an 81-63 thrashing of Washington University (Mo.).
  • Through six games, the Titans pace the CCIW in assists (111), assists per game (18.5), field-goal percentage (46.6), final points (444), free throw attempts (121), free throws made (85), rebounds (202), three-point field goal defense (26.4) and three-point field goal attempts (117). 
  • Maddie Merrit commands the Titans with 17.8 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game. Sydney Shanks (13.0 PPG) rounds out the Titans double-figure scoring averages, and ranks fifth among NCAA Division III women's basketball players with 22 steals.
  • The Titans claimed the 2017-18 CCIW Women's Basketball Regular Season and Tournament Championships. Their run ended in the 2017-18 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament Second Round, where they fell to Trine 79-70.

THE COACHES

  • Mia Smith (214-76), who ranks third on the CCIW Women's Basketball Coaching Wins List, is in her 21st season as Illinois Wesleyan head women's basketball coach.

  • The Lady Reds own a 28-41 all-time record against the Titans. 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Lady Reds registered a 72-49 victory over Calvin College on November 20 on the front end of back-to-back one-game weeks. 
  • Madie Kaelber registered a season-high 21 points and five three-point field goals against the Knights while Maggie Berigan followed with a career-high 18 points, and a season-high four blocks.
  • Autumn Kalis also eclipsed a career-high nine assists while Sammie Woodward notched an all-time best eight rebounds. 

RECORD WATCH

Bailey Gilbert now owns 195 career three-point field goals made, seven shy of tying Haley Stercic's (2011-14) career record mark of 202. Her four three-point field goals against Calvin put her in second place on the Lady Reds' all-time career list ahead of Dani Ripkey's 194. 

BACK ON THE WINNING SIDE

The Lady Reds will look to snap a four-game drought against Illinois Wesleyan. 

ONE-GAME WONDER

With the postponement of the Cornell game on November 25, the Lady Reds are in the midst of rare back-to-back one-game weeks. 

HISTORICAL MILESTONE

The Lady Reds will open CCIW play at Illinois Wesleyan on December 1, the earliest they've ever played a CCIW game in program history. 

PULLING OFF THE TRIFECTA

The Lady Reds pace the CCIW in scoring offense (75.8), scoring defense (54.5) and scoring margin (21.3) through four games. 

LEADING THE WAY

The Lady Reds' .861 (31-36) free throw percentage leads all NCAA Division III teams through four games. 

PROTECTING THE ROCK AND TAKING RISKS

Sammie Woodward leads the CCIW and ranks 16th in the country with a 3.50 assist/turnover ratio through four games. 

CARTHAGE IS...

  • 3-0 when holding opponents to under 60 points.
  • 3-0 when leading with 2:00 remaining in the contest.
