ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The No. 4 Carthage College men's tennis team overcame early deficits in the doubles competition to win their opening round College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament match on Thursday, defeating No. 5 Carroll University to a decision, 5-0.
The win moves the Red Men onto the second round, which will be played on Friday, with a 12-12 record on the season, while the Pioneers season comes to an end at 10-9 overall.
Carthage responded to the first shot that was fired by Carroll, as the Red Men bounced back from deficits in the number-one and number-two doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Picking up the wins of the Red Men were
Herman Abban and
Pawel Jaworski at the one,
Chris Conley and
Lukasz Jaworski at the two and
Fordy Leipold and
Matt Curry at the three.
Carthage then finished the match off quickly with a pair of straight set wins by Leipold and Abban in the number-six and number-one singles to take the match, 5-0.
Each of the remaining matches went unfinished with the Red Men leading the second sets after taking the first set in each.
For Abban, the win moves Abban to 29-3 on the season, tying him for the most wins in a season in program history with Brad Livingston and Daneric Hazelman.
