JANESVILLE, Wis. – The Carthage College men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday, falling to #17 the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-4 in Janesville.
The loss drops the Red Men to 5-6 on the season in dual matches, while the Warhawks improve to 7-4.
Carthage opened the match taking a 2-1 lead as the Red Men took the number-one and three doubles matches.
Herman Abban and
Pawel Jaworski defeated Grant Thompson and Jimmy Engelhart 8-4 to open the night and
Fordy Leipold and
Brandon Stassen topped Lucas Monterroso and Matthew Primozic, 9-7, to closeout the doubles.
Three straight wins by the Warhawks to open the singles competition quickly gave Whitewater a 4-2 lead before straight-set wins by Abban over Thompson [6-0, 6-4] and
Chris Conley over Engelhart [6-2, 6-3] tied the match at 4-4 with one match remaining.
However, the Warhawks prevailed with a third-set win in the number-two singles match to defeat the Red Men, 5-4.
The Red Men will head south now for their annual trip to Orlando for Spring Break where the Red Men will face Babson College, Luther College, Calvin College and a team still to be named from March 20
th through March 24
th.
