NEW BERLIN, Wis. – The Carthage College men's tennis team opened their 2017 indoor season on Saturday with a pair of matches, which the Red Men split on their way to picking up their first dual match win of season.  The Red Men dropped the opener against Carleton College before topping Concordia University Wisconsin in the later match.
 
The split sends the Red Men to 1-2 on the year dating back to the fall, while Carleton improved to 3-0 with their #13 ranking in the Central region and Concordia dropped to 2-1 with the loss.
 
For Carthage, whom currently holds the no. 16 spot in the Central, Herman Abban and Pawel Jaworski were the lone Red Men to earn wins over Carleton.  Herman and Pawel started the day as doubles partners and took down Ezra Frankel and Aaron Goodman in the no. one doubles match, 8-4.  The duo would also turn in a pair of wins in the singles competition as they defeated Carleton's no. one and no. two singles players in straight sets respectively. 
 
In the second match of the day, Carthage jumped out to a 2-1 lead as Abban and P. Jaworski won the one doubles, 8-2, and Chris Conley and Matt Curry won the no. three doubles, 8-4.
 
The Red Men were able sustain the momentum into the singles competition as Carthage won five of six to take the match, 7-2.  Abban, P. Jaworski and Conley won the one through three singles in straight sets respectively and Lukasz Jaworski and Fordy Leipold took care of the four and six singles in super breakers.
 
The Red Men return to action a week from Sunday as they head to Janesville, Wisconsin for a pair of matches with Edgewood College and Lake Forest College.
