Women's Basketball Looks to Keep Perfect Season Alive Against Coe and Chicago

FULL GAME NOTES

THE GAMES

-The Carthage College women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 CCIW) will play their third-consecutive game in the Hawkeye State on Tuesday, November 21 when they face Coe College (1-1, 0-0 IIAC) at 3:00 p.m. The Kohawks, a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, are coming off an 80-71 loss to Augustana College (November 18) after opening the season with a 66-48 victory over NAIA Iowa Wesleyan University (November 15). 

-Coe College, who went 12-14, 7-9 IIAC in 2016-17, are led by Jenna Lehman's 19.0 points per game this season. Lehman paced the Kohawks with 23 points and nine rebounds in their loss to Augustana. 

-The Lady Reds will travel to University of Chicago (2-1, 0-0 UAA) for a 2:00 p.m.-matinee on Sunday November 26 at the Ratner Athletic Center. The Maroons opened their 2017-18 campaign with a 76-32 win over Lake Forest (November 15) before they fell 77-56 to #25 Illinois Wesleyan (November 18) in the opening game of their holiday tournament. They rebounded with an 83-52 win over Colorado College in the backend of their tournament on November 19.

-University of Chicago took second place in the University Athletic Association last season (19-8, 11-3 UAA), which ended with a 73-69 loss to St. Thomas (Minn.) in the 2016-17 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament Second Round. 

-Taylor Lake leads Chicago in scoring (13.3 PPG) while Obi Olariche averages a double-double with 10.7 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game this season.  

THE COACHES

-Kayla Waskow is in her first season as Coe head women's basketball coach. 

-The 2017-18 season marks Carissa Sain Knoche's sixth as Maroons head women's basketball coach. 

THE SERIES

The Lady Reds own a 5-3 all-time mark against Coe, and an 8-9 record against Chicago. 

LAST TIME OUT

-The Lady Reds registered a 2-0 start for only the second time in six seasons with a 77-68 win over Bethel University on November 17, and a 68-56 win over Cornell College on November 18. The other occasion occurred in 2015-16, when Carthage notched a 4-0 start.

-Morgan Harris tallied her 12th career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds in Carthage's victory over Bethel. Madie Kaelber led the Lady Reds scorers with 17 points in the contest.

-Carthage jumped to a 27-4 advantage over Cornell after the first quarter before letting the Rams get within 10 points during the fourth quarter. Kaelber notched 17 points while Gilbert tallied five three-pointers in the contest. 

2017-18 ROSTER BREAKDOWN

Four freshmen, seven sophomores, five juniors, and three seniors makeup up the 2017-18 Lady Reds roster. The sophomore class is the largest of any sophomore class within the past 10 seasons. The state-by-state breakdown consists for four Wisconsin, 14 Illinois and one Iowa. 

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING

Cornell College (Iowa), Knox College and Drew University make up the trio of squads Carthage will face for the first time in school history in 2017-18.  Ripon College and Simpson College also return to the Lady Reds' schedule this season.

CAREER HIGHS

Sammie Woodward notched a career-high three assists and 20 minutes played against Bethel on November 17. Kaelber's eight free throws and eight free throw attempts were career highs against the Royals. Autumn Kalis (31 minutes) and Maggie Berigan (six free throw attempts) also notched career highs in the game.

With Friday's 77-68 win over Bethel, the Lady Reds own a 6-0 all-time record when they open a season on November 17.

SPREADING THINGS OUT

The Lady Reds don't play more than two games in a calender week in 2017-18. Carthage's 2016-17 opening week consisted of three games. 

CHARITY STRIPE

Carthage attempted 32 free throws against Bethel on November 17, which already matched their 2016-17 season high achieved in a 106-95 win at North Central College (Ill.) on January 25. 

IOWA GOLD

The Lady Reds' first three games on the 2017-18 slate are in the state of Iowa. Carthage owns a 14-10 all-time record in Iowa, which includes their victories over Bethel University and Cornell College last week. 

YOU CAN ALWAYS COME BACK HOME

The Lady Reds open their home schedule against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:00 p.m. It marks the latest home-opener for Carthage since 2008-09 when the first one took place on January 5.
