ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Carthage College women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker Wednesday in Rock Island, Illinois, falling to Augustana College, 5-4.

The loss for the Lady Reds is the first of the season for Carthage, who drops to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Vikings stay undefeated and improve to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the CCIW.

Augustana jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the doubles competition with wins in the one and two doubles matches. Each a tightly fought match, Augustana's Dana Goggin and Caitlyn Schaffer topped
Max Mella and
Angelica Emmanouil 8-6 in the one ddoubles and Lauren Goggin and Zeana Badawi defeated
Casey Frommer and
Kristen Kalinka 9-7.

The Lady Reds rebounded to avoid being swept in the doubles with
Natalie Favia and
Eliza Barter defeating Vicki Andonova Madeline Lombardi 9-8 in a match that went to a tiebreaker at 8-8.

Carthage quickly turned the tables on Augustana with two straight-sets wins in the singles three and six matches by Emmanouil and Favia over Schaffer and Lombardi respectively to take a 3-2 lead.Â

Following the Vikings win in the four singles by Badawi over Kalinka,
Casey Frommer took the singles one match in three sets over L. Goggin.Â

Unfortunately for Carthage it wasn't meant to be as Mella and Barter fell in the final two singles matches to give the Vikings the 5-4 edge.

Looking forward to a weekend off, the Lady Reds return to the road next Tuesday, September 20th, to travel to the Windy City for a 3:00 p.m. match with the University of Chicago.
