ELMHURST, Ill. – The Carthage College Lady Reds opened the 2016-17 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season Sunday with an impressive 9-0 victory over the Blue Jays at Elmhurst College.
The Lady Reds, now 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the CCIW, opened with a sweep of the doubles competition with
Max Mella and
Angelica Emmanouil defeating Ava Kolman and Rachel Rettger, 8-4;
Casey Frommer and
Kristen Kalinka topping Chiara Gaudio Dacey Maglaque, 8-0; and
Eliza Barter and
Natalie Favia taking down Hannah Vaselaney and Camille Knapik-Balch, 8-2, in the one through three matches respectively.
"We played really well in the doubles competition today," said head coach
Brady Lindsley. "Going up 3-0 after doubles really takes a lot of pressure off us in singles but our girls didn't relax and carried the positive momentum into the singles competition."
The Lady Reds continued to roll the Blue Jays in the singles competition as Elmhurst dropped to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in the CCIW.
Mella, Emmanouil, Barter and Favia each earned straight-set wins in their respective singles matches, while Frommer and Kalinka both battled back after dropping their first sets to win third setters.
Carthage continues their road trip to begin the season with a match Wednesday at Augustana College. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
