Lady Reds Open CCIW Tournament Wednesday At Augustana

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage College women's lacrosse team will face Augustana College in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Semifinals at Thorson-Lucken Field on Wednesday, May 4 at 7:00 PM in Rock Island, Illinois.  After dropping the season finale on Saturday, the Lady Reds dropped to the four-seed via the goal differential tiebreaker.  In the other semifinal, the number-two seed Illinois Wesleyan locked will host number-three North Central in the second CCIW Semifinal game on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
 
Earlier this season, the Lady Reds were bested by the Vikings at Augustana back on April 16th, falling in Rock Island, 18-7.
 
About Augustana College [15-2, 6-0 CCIW]:
Augustana returns to the CCIW Tournament as the top seed for the second-straight year after the Vikings claimed the inaugural CCIW title with a wins over Elmhurst and Carthage a year ago on their way to the title.
 
CCIW Offensive Player of the Year, Anna Hopkins, and Defensive Player of the Year Olivia Mayer lead Augustana who led the conference in 2016 with eight all-CCIW selections.  Hopkins finished first in the conference in 2016 with 3.62 goals per game, tied for first with six game winning goals, and sixth in at 1.50 assists per game. 
 
Mayer led the Augustana defense as a midfielder that allowed a CCIW-best 5.47 goals against average, while individually causing the second-most turnovers on the year with 30.
 
Meredith Newman is in her third season as the head coach of Augustana.
 
About Carthage College [10-5, 4-2 CCIW]:
The Lady Reds enter postseason after dropping a heartbreaker in their season finale with an overtime loss to North Central College.  Essentially dropping Carthage from the number-two seed to the number-four seed as the tiebreakers played out.
 
Carthage is led by three all-conference first team selections in Maddie Griffin, Rachel Mussell and Taylor Sopron, and second team picks Heather Martin and Kara Vana.  Additionally, Vana was named the 2016 CCIW Newcomer of the year after finishing in the top-ten goals per game, points per game and free position goals in the conference.
 
Vana's 41 goals on the season edged out Griffin's 40 for the most on the Lady Reds in 2016.
 
 
The winner of Wednesday's semifinal contests will advance to the CCIW Championship Game on Saturday, May 7 at the highest remaining seed.
