Warhawks Take Care of Lady Reds

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WHITEWATER, WIS.—The mild-sunny weather from Clermont, Florida decided to follow the Carthage College softball team to their doubleheader at UW-Whitewater on Tuesday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but a 50 percent chance of rain forced the change to Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Reds set the tone in game one when Kristine Herdegen hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, but couldn't hold that lead in a 10-6 loss. Carthage fell to the Warhawks 9-0 in game two.

The losses drop the Lady Reds to 6-6, 0-0 CCIW while UW-Whitewater improves to 9-4, 0-0 WIAC.

Vivian Juarez reached base on a single to set up Herdegen's two-run home run to give the Lady Reds a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Warhawks cut that lead in half when Maggie Hansen tallied a home run in the second inning to make the score 2-1.

Shannon Walsh pushed the Carthage lead to 3-1 with a run before the Warhawks took the lead for good. The home run ball was in tune for the Warhawks as Hansen and Nikki Mikosz each tallied one to widen their lead to 7-3 after three innings.

Juarez notched her third hit of the game in the fifth inning with a line-drive RBI-triple to the right field fence. This scored Shannon Walsh, who singled, to get the Lady Reds within two runs of the Warhawks at 7-5.

Amy Ricci reached base on a walk for the Warhawks in the bottom of five, which triggered Carthage head coach Amy Gillmore to swap in Katie Herron on the pitching rubber. Kayla Seymour (Ricci's pinch runner) eventually scored to push the Warhawk lead to 8-5.

The Lady Reds mustered one more run when Hailey Rothstein hit a home run over the center field porch in the sixth inning to narrow their margin to 8-6. The Warhawks closed the game's scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of sixth inning to secure a 10-6 victory.

Juarez paced the Lady Red offense with a single, double and triple. Herdegen and Rothstein each notched home runs for Carthage. Darian Pelsor and Herron each saw time in the pitching circle for the Lady Reds.
