Box ScoreThe Carthage College men's tennis team (19-6, 6-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin), ranked No. 16 in the April 30 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division III Central Region poll, defeated Augustana College (Ill., 14-13, 4-2), 5-2, in the championship match of the CCIW Men's Tennis Championship on Saturday, May 2, at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wis.
Previously, the Red Men defeated Elmhurst College (9-10, 2-4 CCIW) in the semifinal match, 5-0, and Augustana edged out Wheaton College (Ill. 14-7, 5-1 CCIW), 5-4, to advance to the finals.
It was an intense, close match between the Red Men and the Vikings, with five out of the six singles matches going to third sets. Carthage took the 2-1, lead after doubles after the No. 1 doubles tandem of
Pawel Jaworski (So., Deerfield, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) and
Jordan Verbauwhede (Jr., Whitelawe, Wis./Manitowoc-Lincoln, 20-6) defeated the Vikings' pair of Sam Totten and Eric Pohl 8-3, and the No. 2 doubles duo of Boomgarden (Jr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area) and
Chris Conley (Jr., Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield Academy, 20-5) downed Augustana 8-1. The pair of
Ryan Jump (Jr., Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and
Alex Ferruzzi (Jr., Kenosha, Wis./Salem-Westosha Central, 10-5) put up a fight in their match after recovering from a 2-5 deficit, however, the Vikings held on and took the match 9-8(6).
Jaworski (14-12) fell at No. 1 singles to Augustana's Lawrence Palmer, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, however, Jump (21-3) was a winner at No. 3 singles defeating the Viking's Pohl 6-2, 6-2. Verbauwhede (19-9) pulled out a three-set match victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Augustana 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Ferruzzi (19-8) had the deciding match at No. 6 singles, after he edged out the Vikings' Austin Schoeck 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. Boomgarden (22-5) at No. 2 singles, as well as Conley (23-6) at No. 4 singles did not complete their matches.
The Red Men win the CCIW title and gain the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Men's Championship. The Central Regional Championship will be held on Fri.-Sun., May 8-10, with the time and location to be announced.
