The Carthage College men's track and field team (10-1 indoor record) opened its indoor season on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 16-17 by finishing second at its own Private College Invitational at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis. 

The University of Chicago won the 12-team event with 183 points, followed by Carthage second at 125, the Milwaukee School of Engineering third at 68.50, Benedictine University (Ill.) fourth at 52, Concordia University (Ill.) fifth at 37, Concordia University (Wis.) sixth at 33, Wisconsin-Parkside seventh at 32, Cardinal Stritch University eighth at 28, Trinity Christian College ninth at 25, North Park University 10th at 11.50 and Lake Forest College tied for 11th place with Wisconsin Lutheran College at six points each.
 
Carthage's Branden Miller (Sr., Winfield, Ill./Wheaton-North) won the shot put (52-4) and finished second in the weight throw (55-9 ¾).  The Red Men also collected wins from Mike Brown (Sr., St. Charles, Ill./East) in the 55-meter dash (6.59), David Goodalis (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Central) in the weight throw (56-11 ¼) and Brad Krueger (Fr., Marshfield, Wis.) in the decathlon (4,371 points).  Dan Hoffman (Fr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) took second place in the long jump (211-5 ¼), as did Mark Balmes (Jr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) in the shot put (52-2).
 
Ron Banks (Sr., Waukegan, Ill.) was third in the long jump (21-4 ¾) and fourth in the triple jump (41-8 ¾).  Camren Howard (Fr., Olympia Fields, Ill./Chicago Heights-Marian Catholic) finished third in the 800-meter run (2:01.88), as did Dan Cotton (Fr., Carol Stream, Ill./Bartlett) in the one-mile run (4:34.63) and Nick Hinton (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) in the high jump (6-0 ¾).
 
Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Friday, Jan. 23 for the North Central College "Cardinal Opener" at the Al Carius Track, beginning at 4 p.m.
