Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (12-8, 3-3 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost both ends of a Wednesday, April 9 doubleheader with CCIW-opponent and No. 19 Illinois Wesleyan University (19-4, 6-2 CCIW), 4-2 and 6-2, at the Illinois Wesleyan Softball Field in Bloomington, Ill. The two losses dropped the Lady Reds to fourth place in the league, trailing North Central College (5-1), Illinois Wesleyan (6-2) and Augustana College (Ill., 4-2).
In the opening game, Illinois Wesleyan scored a run in the second inning on an RBI-single by Amanda Fazzari. The Titans scored again in the third when Carthage pitcher
Makenzie Walker hit Sara Daley with a pitch to load the bases and then plunked Katie Caulfield to force in a run.
Olivia Scott's RBI-single in the fourth brought Carthage back to a run down, 2-1. Hannah Bowen's run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth put IWU back up by two runs, 3-1. Sara Daley's RBI-double in the fifth made it 4-1 Titans, but a solo homer run by Carthage's
Abby Hanson in the sixth cut the lead to 4-2 and closed out the scoring.
Jenna Nolan (9-2) was the winning pitcher. She limited Carthage to two runs, one earned, on five hits and walk, while striking out 10 batters.
Makenzie Walker (Fr., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford, 4-2) took the loss by giving up four runs, all earned, on eight hits and two walks over four innings.
Tina Campbell blanked the Titans over the final two frames. Carthage's
Abby Hanson (Sr., Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) went three-for-three with two runs scored and an RBI.
Illinois Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap on a RBI-double by Cassidy Tarpey. A solo home run by Danielle Burge in the fourth, along with another RBI-double by Tarpey made it 3-0. The Titans broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning. Sara Daley doubled in a run, Allie Riordan singled home another, and Katie Caulfield singled in the next. The Lady Reds got two runs back in the sixth on an RBI-single by
Abby Hanson and a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Olivia Scott.
Illinois Wesleyan's Molly McCready (9-2) twirled a one-hit shutout in the second game, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and four strikeouts.
Katie Herron (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park, 4-2) took the loss and gave up five runs on nine hits over four and one-third innings.
Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent and No. 18 North Central College (22-4, 5-1 CCIW) on Wednesday, April 16 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Carthage Softball Field. The North Central set was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 15.
