Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (10-6, 1-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) split a Sunday, April 6 doubleheader with non-conference opponent St. Norbert College (5-10). The Lady Reds won the first game, 2-0, but the Green Knights took the nightcap by a 4-2 margin.
Carthage took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on an RBI-double by
Vicki Pyan and an RBI-single by
Darian Pelsor. The Knights loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning, but Carthage starting pitcher
Katie Herron (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) got JoAnna Ruppa on a swinging third strike to end the threat. Herron (4-1) blanked St. Norbert on five hits and two walks over seven innings, while striking out two batters. Morgan Rusch (3-7) took the loss.
Darian Pelsor (Jr., Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) went three-for-three with an RBI for the Lady Reds.
Carthage broke a scoreless tie in the second game with two runs in the third. A misplayed force situation at second base followed by a throwing error on a bunt play led to a pair of unearned runs. The Knights took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a three-run home run by Codi Jenshak. St. Norbert made it 4-2 in the fifth, scoring an unearned run on an RBI-single by Jessica DeMeuse. Brianna Byrne (1-2) was the winning pitcher in game two, as she stopped Carthage on two unearned runs on three hits and four walks over seven innings. Codi Jenshak drove in three runs for the Green Knights.
Tina Campbell (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood, 3-1) took the loss. Campbell gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk over four and one-third innings.
Carthage plays CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 12-8, 0-2 CCIW) on Monday, April 7 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Leedy Field in Wheaton, Ill.
