Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (16-10, 5-5 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) swept a Tuesday, April 22 doubleheader with non-conference opponent Ripon College (8-25), 9-2 and 7-2, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Ripon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on an RBI-single by Cassie Bilotto. Carthage took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by
Vicki Pyan and an RBI-single by
Darian Pelsor. Bilotto singled in another run in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2. Carthage sent 10 batters to plate in the fifth and scored five times to up its lead to 8-2.
Corinne Sheley singled in a run, as did Pyan and
Alyse Mikolas, followed by a two-run single off the bat of pinch-hitter
Kacie Cecchi. An RBI-double by
Katie Morman in the sixth closed out the scoring at 9-2.
Darian Pelsor (Fr., Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook, 2-3) was the winning pitcher. She allowed two runs on seven hits and no walks over five innings. Ashley Gnacinski (6-14) took the loss and surrendered all nine runs on 14 hits, two walks and six strikeouts over six innings.
Vicki Pyan (Sr., Crystal Lake, Ill./South) led the Lady Reds with three hits in four trips with three runs scored and three RBI.
In the nightcap, the Lady Reds broke a scoreless tie in the fourth on an RBI-single by
Bryanna Heckel and an RBI-double by
Katie Morman. Carthage added two runs in the fourth on an RBI-single by
Becky Cronk and a fielder's choice-RBI off the bat of
Corinne Sheley. The Lady Reds made it 6-0 in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Morman and an RBI-double by
Darian Pelsor.
Becky Bluhm singled in a run the sixth to make it 7-0. The Red Hawks finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh, thanks to a two-run homer by Cassie Bilotto.
Carthage starting pitcher
Katie Herron (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park, 5-3) did not allow a base runner for the first four innings, while striking out six batters.
Tina Campbell (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood) relieved in the fifth and earned her first save, despite giving up two runs on three hits over three innings. The Red Hawks' Korrine Peterson broke up a combined no-hit bid with a two-out single up the middle in the sixth. Haylea Hoskins (5-3) took the loss. Carthage was led by
Becky Cronk (Jr., Bolingbrook, Ill.), who went three-for-three with three runs scored and an RBI.
Carthage plays host to non-conference opponent Concordia University (Ill., 10-20) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 23, also at the Carthage Softball Field.
