The Carthage College women's basketball team (26-3, 13-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin), ranked ninth in the March 4 "D3hoops.com" poll, takes on defending-national-champion and No. 3 DePauw University (29-1) on Friday, March 14 in a 7:30 p.m. (all times EDT) sectional semifinal game of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship at DePauw's Raymond "Gaumey" Neal Fieldhouse in Greencastle, Ind.
In the other semifinal game, No. 12 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (26-3) takes on national-runner-up and No. 13 Wisconsin-Whitewater (24-4) at 5 p.m. The sectional-championship game gets underway on Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m.
Carthage defeated No. 2 Hope College (28-1), 72-67, on Saturday, March 8 in a second-round game of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. In first-round action on Friday, March 7, Carthage defeated No. 36 St. Norbert College (21-5), 60-51, and Hope (28-0) got by No. 29 Wisconsin Lutheran College (24-4), 60-54.
The winner of the March 13-14 sectional championship advances the national semifinals on Friday, March 21 at Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse in Stevens Point, Wis.
Looking at DePauw: Kris Huffman (495-103, 20 years thru March 13) coaches the DePauw University Tigers, who are making their 15th NCAA appearance. The defending-national champions also won an NCAA title in 2007. Last year's team went 34-0 and defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater, 69-51, in the title game in at Hope College's DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Mich. This year's team, ranked first most of the season in the "D3hoops.com" poll, saw its 58-game winning streak snapped on Feb. 22 with a 65-64 loss at Ohio Wesleyan University. The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in the March 4 national poll, bring a 29-1 mark into the sectional semifinals. DePauw defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College, 79-68, in the NCAA first round at Neal Fieldhouse, and won over Transylvania University, 76-68, in the second round. Carthage's series with DePauw is tied at 1-1, and prior to Ohio Wesleyan's victory on Feb. 22, the Lady Reds were the last team to defeat the Tigers. Carthage edged DePauw, 53-48, on March 3, 2012 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship in Greencastle, Ind. In the only other meeting between the two team, the Tiger defeated the Lady Reds, 81-78, on Dec. 4, 1993, in the St. Mary's of Notre Dame Invitational.
Looking at Wisconsin-Oshkosh: Brad Fischer (46-9, 2 years thru March 13) coaches the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans, who are making their 11th NCAA appearance. The 1996 team, coached by Kathi Bennett, won a national title, but this is the Titans' first tournament appearance since 2000. Fischer was an assistant coach at Wisconsin-Parkside from 2006 to 2011 and the Rangers' assistant athletic director for communications in 2012. Wisconsin-Oshkosh, runner-up to Wisconsin-Whitewater in this year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings, won the WIAC Women's Basketball Tournament to earn the league's automatic NCAA qualifier. The No. 12 Titans defeated St. Mary's University (Minn.), 71-61, in a first-round game at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wis., and won over No. 5 Washington University (Mo.), 72-66, in the second round. Wisconsin-Oshkosh leads the Carthage series, which began with a March 23, 1968 game in Stevens Point, Wis., 12-4. The two teams last met on Dec. 3, 1997, with the Titans winning a 56-38 game at the Carthage Physical Education Center.
Looking at Wisconsin-Whitewater: Keri Carollo (231-106, 12 years thru March 13) coaches the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, who finished second to DePauw University in last year's NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship game at Hope College's DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Mich. Wisconsin-Whitewater is making its 14th NCAA appearance, with the 2008 team finishing third. This year's team won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title but lost to Wisconsin-Superior, 84-63, in the semifinals of the WIAC Women's Basketball Tournament. The Titans received an at-large berth the NCAA tournament and defeated the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), 87-78, in a second-round game in St. Paul, Minn., after winning over Concordia College (Minn.), 79-72, in the first round. Wisconsin-Whitewater leads the Carthage series, which began with a March 16, 1968 contest in Whitewater, Wis., 23-14. The two teams played 22 WWIAC contests between 1970 and 1977. The Lady Reds won two-straight NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship games over the Warhawks, including a 79-74 second-round game on March 6, 2010 in Whitewater, Wis., and a 74-68 decision on March 2, 2012 at DePauw's Neal Fieldhouse in Greencastle, Ind. In the third NCAA meeting on March 2, 2013, Wisconsin-Whitewater won a 71-51 second-round game over Carthage in Whitewater, Wis. Earlier this year, Carthage defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater, 91-77, on Dec. 29 at the "D3hoops.com Classic" at the South Point Hotel Casino Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
