Box Score 3 The Carthage College men's volleyball team (17-6, 6-0 Continental Volleyball Conference West Division), ranked fourth in the March 18 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, saw its 11-match winning streak snapped on Sunday night, March 23 with a 3-0 loss to No. 7 the University of California-Santa Cruz (11-10) West Fieldhouse in Santa Cruz, Calif. UC-Santa Cruz' winning set scores over Carthage were 25-20, 25-21 and 25-15. The Red Men's last loss was to Cardinal Stritch University on Feb. 20.
Carthage opened a three-match to UC-Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon, March 23 with a 3-1 win over Holy Names University (2-9),. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Hawks were 25-17, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-13. Carthage played a second match against the host-Banana Slugs (11-11) on Tuesday, March 25 and won a 3-0 contest with winning set scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19.
In the win over Holy Names, Carthage's
Ryan Paull (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) led the Red Men with 19 kills, a .552 attack percentage, two block solos and eight block assists.
Kris Telfer (So., San Jose, Calif./Prospect) had nine kills, a .438 average and two block solos. In the loss to UC-Santa Cruz, Jake Landel led the Banana Slugs with 17 kills and a .630 attack percentage. J
Jim Schultz (Sr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) had 11 kills for Carthage.
On Saturday, March 29, the Red Men return home to play conference-opponent Dominican University (Ill.) in a 7 p.m. contest at the Igini Sports Forum in River Forest, Ill.
