Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament
The Carthage College women's tennis team (0-1, 0-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened its 2013-14 season on Friday, Aug. 30 with a 6-3 indoor loss to CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 1-0, 1-0 CCIW). Rain and lightning on Friday led to the match being moved from the Smeds Tennis Center to the Eastside Tennis & Fitness Club in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage's Bari Reynolds (Sr., Sterling, Ill.) lost to Augustana's Kim Sawyer at No. 1 singles, Sawyer winning, 6-2, 6-2. Haleigh McPeek (Jr. Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) fell to the Vikings' Lauren Goggin at No. 2 singles, Goggin winning, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Abbi Howell (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) lost at No. 3 singles, as did Eliza Barter (Fr., Deerfield, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) at No. 4 singles and Kristen Kalinka (Fr., Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph) at No. 5 singles. Holly Weber (Sr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) was a winner at No. 6 singles. The Lady Reds' No. 1 doubles team of Reynolds and McPeek defeated Sawyer and Aileen MacDonald, 8-3. Carthage's No 2 team of Howell and Barter lost to Augustana, while the No. 3 tandem of Kalinka and Weber was a winner.
On Saturday, Aug. 31, the Lady Reds finished fourth at the Wisconsin-Whitewater "Warhawk Invitational" at the Wangerin Tennis Courts in Whitewater, Wis. The host-Warhawks won the eight-team event with 51 points, followed by Wisconsin-La Crosse second at 27, Augustana College (Ill.) third at 26, Carthage fourth at 16.50, Wisconsin-Oshkosh fifth at 12.50, Grinnell College sixth at 11.50, Lake Forest College seventh with 7.50 points and Illinois Wesleyan University eighth with seven points.
The Lady Reds play host to Lawrence University (1-1) on Tuesday, Sept. 3 in a Noon match at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wis.
