Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (15-5, 2-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), tied for 34th place in the April 3 National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, swept a Monday, April 8 a doubleheader from Carroll University (4-16), 9-0 and 2-1, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on an RBI-single by
Katie Morman. The Lady Reds scored two in the second, the first on an RBI-double by
Alyse Mikolas and the other on an RBI-single by
Bryanna Heckel. The Lady Reds added two more in the third and four in the fourth to make it 9-0. A two-run double by Morman, was the big hit in the fourth, and the game was called in the fifth due to an eight-run rule
Krystina Leazer (Sr., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) upped her record to 9-2 by limiting the Pioneers to no runs on two hits and a walk over five innings, while striking out eight batters. Taylor Steinhilberer (2-6) took the loss and surrendered all nine runs on 11 hits and two walks.
Katie Morman (Jr., Kenosha, Wis./Somers Shoreland Lutheran) went two-for-three with two runs scored and three RBI.
Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap on back-to-back doubles by
Olivia Scott and
Abby Hanson. The Pioneers got a run back in the fourth on four-straight singles off starting pitcher Tina Campbell. The Lady Reds took a 2-1 lead in the sixth.
Abby Hanson led off with a single. Pinch-runner A.J. Grigsby went to second on a bunt, advance to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by
Jen Precht (Sr., Antioch, Ill./Community).
Tina Campbell (Jr., St. Petersburg, Ill./Lakewood, 6-3) , who struck out the side in order in the seventh, gave up just the one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings, while striking out eight batters. Christine Roggemann (3-7) took the loss.
Abby Hanson and
Corinne Sheley each had two hits for the Lady Reds.
Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 12-7, 1-1 CCIW) on Thursday, April 11 in a 3 p.m. twinbill, also at the Carthage field.
