The Carthage College women's basketball team (23-4, 13-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 23rd in the Feb. 26 “D3hoops.com” poll and tied for 24th place in the Feb. 26 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll, opens play in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. versus No. 7 Thomas More College (27-1) at Wisconsin-Whitewater's Kachel Gymnasium in Whitewater, Wis.  

No. 22 Wisconsin-Whitewater (21-6) will take on No. 32 Wisconsin Lutheran College (25-2) in the other first-round game at 7:30 p.m. The Saturday, March 2 second-round game will start at 7 p.m.

Game times will be announced on Tuesday.  Tickets will be sold at the University Center ticket office located on the main campus mall during regular business hours, and at the Kachel Gymnasium prior to the game. Call 262-472-2222 for ticket information.
 
Carthage won the title game of the CCIW Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday night, Feb. 23, 61-52, over No. 43 Wheaton College (Ill., 22-5) at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.  With the win, the Lady Reds earned the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship.  Carthage won its tournament-semifinal game, 91-81, over North Central College (13-13) on Friday, Feb. 22, with Wheaton (Ill.) edging Illinois Wesleyan University (18-8), 62-59, in the other semifinal contest. 
 
Carthage is making its fourth appearances in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship in 2013.  Coach Tim Bernero's 2012 team advanced to the “elite eight,” and his 2010 team reached the “sweet 16.”  Carthage's 1996 squad made the Lady Reds' first-ever NCAA appearance.

Looking at Thomas More:  Jeff Hans (52-6, 2 years thru Feb. 28) coaches the Thomas More College Saints, who won their seventh-consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament championship over Washington & Jefferson College by a 72-59 margin.  Thomas More, ranked sixth in the Feb. 26 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll and seventh by “D3hoops.com,” is making its seventh-straight NCAA appearance and its 11th overall.  Last year's team fell to CCIW-member Illinois Wesleyan University, 77-50, in a second-round game.  This is the first meeting between Carthage and Thomas More.
 
Looking at Wisconsin-Whitewater:  Keri Carollo (202-101, 11 years thru Feb. 28) coaches the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, who are making their sixth-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and the eleventh in school history. The Warhawks are ranked 22nd in the Feb. 26 “D3hoops,com” poll and 28th in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll. 

Wisconsin-Whitewater advanced to the final four of the of the 2008 NCAA tourney in Holland, Mich.  The Warhawks won this year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship but lost the league's tournament title game to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 76-71, in overtime. 

Carthage trials the long-running Wisconsin-Whitewater series, which began in 1968, 22-13.  Carthage was a member of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) from 1971 to 1982.  The Lady Reds have won two-straight NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship games over the Warhawks, including a 79-74 second-round game on March 6, 2010 in Whitewater, Wis., and a 74-68 decision on March 2, 2012 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.
 
Looking at Wisconsin Lutheran:  Klay Knueppel (167-79, 9 years thru Feb. 28) coaches the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors, who won the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament with a 75-52 win over Concordia University (Wis.). Wisconsin Lutheran, ranked 32nd in the Feb. 26 “D3hoops,com” poll, is making its third-consecutive NCAA tourney appearance and the fifth in school history.  Last year's team fell to Calvin College, 59-47, in a first-round contest.  The Lady Reds lead the series with the Warriors, which dates to 1993, 7-6.  The two teams last met in the 2011 Wisconsin Lutheran “Dunn Sporting Goods Tip-Off Tournament” in Milwaukee.
