USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll and 20th in the pre-season “D3hoops.com” poll, opened its 2012-13 season on Friday, Nov. 16 with a 57-50 win over Wisconsin-River Falls (0-1) in the first round of the St. Norbert College "Baylake Bank Tip-Off Tournament" at the Schuldes Center in De Pere, Wis.
The host-Green Knights (1-0) defeated Lakeland College (0-1), 58-42, in Friday's second game, Wisconsin-River Falls (0-1) will play Lakeland (0-1) in the Saturday, Nov. 17 consolation game at 1 p.m., with Carthage playing St. Norbert (1-0) in the 3 p.m. championship game.
Carthage opened an early, 6-0 lead over Wisconsin-River Falls, and the Lady Reds held a narrow lead most of the first half. Carthage used an 11-4 run at the start of the second half to open up an eight-point lead, 33-25, at 17:17. The Falcons pulled to within a point. 35-34, at 12:24 on layup by Brittany Gregorich. The Lady Reds went back up by six, 40-34, at 8:42 on a jumper by
Cailee Corcoran. UW-River Falls closed to within four, 50-46, at 2:15 on a pair of free throws by Brooke Lauritzen. A three-point play by the Lady Reds'
Gabby Chapa at 1:35 put Carthage up by seven, 53-46, and the Lady Reds went on to win by that margin, 57-50.
Neither team shot very well. Carthage connected at 38 percent rate (21-of-56), including six-of-19 from three-point range, while Wisconsin-River Falls shot just 29 percent (19-of-65). The Falcons out-rebounded the Lady Reds by a 50-34 margin. Carthage's
Cailee Corcoran (Sr., Oak Lawn, Ill./Chicago-Marist) scored a game-high 21 points on 10-of-20 field goals, along with nine rebounds and four steals.
Stephanie Kuzmanic (Jr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Wheeling) had 12 points, four assists and three steals, Hailey Stercic (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Marist) 11 points,
Gabby Chapa (Jr., Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich) six points and seven assists, and
Kristi Schmidt (Jr., Bloomington, Ill./Normal-Community) added five points and nine boards.
Brittany Gregorich topped the Falcons with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Tess Lueders had 11 points and seven rebounds. Brooke Lauritzen had five points and a game-high 10 boards for UW-River Falls.
