The Carthage College men's tennis team (14-6, 3-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) edged CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 6-9, 1-2 CCIW), 5-4, on Wednesday, April 20 in Wheaton, Ill.
Carthage's
Jeff Lotz Jr. (So., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 20-4), ranked 16th in the April 14 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Region rankings, defeated the Thunder's Taylor Johnson at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Daneric Hazelman (Jr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands/Natabua, 20-5) won over Stephan Rauh at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Matt Whiteside (Jr., Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 19-3) was a winner No. 3 singles.
Alex McLean (Jr., Belleville, Ill./West, 4-8) fell at No. 4 singles, as did
Nick Boomgarden (Jr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 12-12) at No. 5 singles and
Russell Mull (Jr., Lake Forest, Ill., 2-11) at No. 6 singles.
Carthage's No. 1 doubles team of Lotz and Hazelman (20-4), ranked 12th in the region, was winner over Wheaton, as was the No. 2 team of Whiteside and Boomgarden (17-6). The Red Men's No. 3 tandem of McLean and Mull (0-1) fell to the Thunder.
On Friday, April 22, the Red Men travel to St. Louis, Mo., to play two matches at Webster University. Carthage takes on Webster at 11 a.m. and Westminster College (Mo.) at 4 p.m. On the way back home on Saturday, April 23, the Red Men make a stop in Elsah, Ill., to play Principia College at 11 a.m.
