Carthage Softball Moves into Second Place by Sweeping Illinois Wesleyan on April 17

The Carthage College softball team (16-12, 7-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a Sunday, April 17 doubleheader from CCIW-opponent and No. 21 Illinois Wesleyan University (16-10, 4-4 CCIW), 1-0 and 5-2, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.

Sunday's set was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 16 before being postponed due to wet grounds. The sweep moved the Lady Reds into second place in the league behind 7-1 Millikin University.

In the opener, Carthage scored the game's lone run on a solo home run by Kari Peterson (Sr., Blooming Prairie, Minn./Blooming Prairie) in the fifth inning. Starting pitcher Krystina Leazer (So., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove, 12-5) made that stand up by twirling a six-hit shutout, walking one and striking out eight batters. Molly McCready (4-5) took the loss.

In the nightcap, the Lady Reds broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on a three-run homer by Alyssa Schrader (Jr., Plainfield, Ill./South). Carthage scored its first run on an RBI-single by Katie Paulmeyer (So., Alsip, Ill..Chicago-Marist) in the third inning. After the Titans scored in the sixth to close the gap to 4-2, Stephanie Schafer (Jr., Burlington, Wis.) singled home a run the seventh to close out the scoring at 5-2.

Krystina Leazer (13-5), in relief of Alyssa Sirocchi (Fr., Oak Creek, Wis.), picked up the win in the second game. Sirocchi worked the first inning and two-thirds. Leazer pitched the final five and one-third innings and allowed one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out seven batters. Alyssa Vorel (4-2) took the loss. Katie Paulmeyer went three-for-four with an RBI, while Alyssa Schrader went two-for-four with three RBI.

Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Tuesday, April 19 to play CCIW-opponent North Central College (17-8, 4-2 CCIW) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Shanower Family Softball Field.
