The Carthage College women's lacrosse team (0-2, 0-0 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference) was edged by Birmingham-Southern College (1-0), 13-11, on Saturday, March 5 at Panther Stadium in Birmingham, Ala. Carthage opened its 2011 season on Friday, March 4 with an 18-9 loss to the University of Redlands (1-0) at the University of the South's Puett Field in Sewanee, Tenn.
In the loss to Birmingham-Southern, the Lady Reds trailed by two points at halftime, 6-4. The Panthers upped their lead to 9-4 at 25:41 second period. Carthage score three unanswered goals to pull to within two points, 9-7, at 18:33. After Birmingham-Southern scored at 12:53 to go up, 10-7, the Lady Reds scored three more unanswered goals to tie the game, 10-10, at 7:59. The Panthers scored at 4:17 and 2:17 to take a 12-10 lead. Carthage's Olivia Nino scored her fifth goal of the game at 1:35 to narrow the margin to 12-11, but Birmingham-Southern's Ashley Johnson scored with 15 seconds to go for the final, 13-11 margin.
Ashley Johnson and Chelsea Van Voorhis each scored four goals for Birmingham-Southern, with Van Voorhis adding an assist. Lindsay Griffin had three goals with an assist. For Carthage, Olivia Nino (So., Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) scored five times, with Anna Schweiss (Fr., Parker, Colo./Chaparral) and Michelle Tumberger (Jr., Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) scoring two goals each. Karissa Secora (So., Brookfield, Wis./East) totaled six ground balls.
In the Redlands game, Carthage fell behind, 9-5, in the first period. The Bulldogs opened the second half with six unanswered goals to up their lead to 15-5 and went on to win by nine goals, 18-9. Crystal Painter and Aimee Dewan led Redlands with four goals each, and Painter added an assist. Jacky Craycraft and Blair Callaghan had two goals each. Hannah Sopeth (Jr., Lakeville, Minn./North) topped the Lady Reds with four goals. Anna Schweiss (Fr., Parker, Colo./Chaparral) scored twice, and Kate Flanagan (Sr., Wheeling, Ill.) collected four ground balls.
Carthage travels to the Pacific Northwest on March 15-19 for three games over spring break. On Tuesday, March 15, the Lady Reds play Pacific University in a 6 p.m. game (all times PST) at Lincoln Park Stadium in Forest Grove, Ore. On Thursday, March 17, Carthage takes on Linfield College in a 4:30 p.m. game at the Linfield Lacrosse Field in McMinnville, Ore. The trip concludes on Saturday, March 19 with a 1 p.m. tilt versus the University of Puget Sound at Peyton Field in Tacoma, Wash.
