The Carthage College softball team (4-6, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) completed its spring trip to the Florida “Rebel Games” in Kissimmee, Fla., on Friday, March 18 by splitting a pair of games with Wisconsin-River Falls and Rowan University. Carthage defeated UW-River Falls (5-8), 12-4, before being blanked by Rowan University (8-5) by a 9-0 margin.
In the win over Wisconsin-River Falls, Carthage took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Mary Kate Brooks singled home a run, Alyssa Schrader doubled in two, and Alyse Mikolas singled the fourth run. The Falcons got a run back in the fourth before Carthage took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of Schrader. UW-River Falls trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the fifth, before the Lady Reds scored seven times in the bottom half to end the game after five innings. Brooks hit a grand slam homer in the fifth, and Katie Paulmeyer added a two-run single. Brooks went two-for-four with five RBI, and Schrader two-for-four with three RBI. Pitcher Krystina Leazer (So., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) improved her record to 4-1 by allowing four runs on 11 hits and no walks over five innings. Jamie Klein (3-5), the first-of-two Falcon pitchers, took the loss.
In the loss to Rowan, the Profs scored four times in the opening inning off starting pitcher Alyssa Schrader. Rowan added a single run in the third and two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth frames to end the game after five innings. Rowan collected 13 hits off two Lady Reds hurlers. Profs leadoff batter Nicolina Veneziano went three-for-three with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Rowan pitcher Amanda Singer (6-2) was the winner. She blanked Carthage on one hit and one walk over five innings, while striking out nine batters. Alyssa Schrader (Jr., Plainfield, Ill./South, 0-2) took the loss. Schrader surrendered nine runs on six hits over the first three innings, with Alyssa Sirocchi working the final two innings.
The Lady Reds are scheduled to travel to Lake Forest, Ill., on Wednesday, March 23 to play Lake Forest College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Lake Forest Softball Field.
