The Carthage College softball team (3-3, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) split a Wednesday, March 16 doubleheader at the Florida “Rebel Games” in Kissimmee, Fla., defeating Westminster College (Pa., 1-6), 9-1, before falling to Montclair State University (4-1) by a 4-1 margin. On Thursday, March 17, Carthage takes on Rutgers-Camden (1 p.m.) and Utica College (3 p.m.).
In the win over Westminster (Pa.), Carthage took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on a two-run single by Alyssa Schrader. The Lady Reds scored six times in the fifth. Stephanie Schafer hit a two-run single, and Bryanna Heckel tripled in the inning to aid in the mercy-rule, five-inning victory. Schrader, Heckel and Mary Kate Brooks had two hits each. Pitcher Krystina Leazer (So., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove, 3-0) picked up the win by allowing one run on two hits. Lia Schulz took the loss for Westminster (Pa.).
In the loss to Montclair State, the Red Hawks broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Kelli O'Brien. Dana Amato and Heather Bergman added run-scoring singles in the seventh inning. Jamie Miller (1-1) was the winning pitcher for the Red Hawks. She gave up one run on three hits and two walks. Alyssa Sirocchi (0-1) took the loss for the Lady Reds by allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over the first four and one-third innings.
The trip concludes on Friday, March 18 with games against Wisconsin-River Falls (9 a.m.) and Rowan University (11 a.m.).
